Before launching programs, DESDAI Women’s Hope believes it is important to understand the experiences, priorities, challenges, and hopes of the communities we aim to serve.

Our first community engagement in [Village/Zone Name] gave us an opportunity to do exactly that.

We met with [women/community members/youth/local leaders/community groups] to listen, learn, and begin building relationships.

Listening Before Acting

Community development cannot be effective when solutions are designed without understanding the people affected by them.

During our engagement, community members shared their experiences and identified issues that affect their households and livelihoods.

Some of the key themes we heard included:

  • Limited economic opportunities

  • Challenges accessing savings and financial services

  • The importance of women’s income-generating activities

  • The need for practical skills and training

  • Opportunities for stronger community groups

  • The importance of women’s participation in decision-making

  • Challenges faced by young people

  • The value of stronger community networks

These conversations helped us understand that communities already have ideas and resources. What is often needed is an opportunity to connect those strengths with the right support.

    What Women Told Us

Women spoke about the importance of having reliable ways to save money and build financial security.

For many households, even small amounts of savings can provide greater resilience when unexpected expenses arise.

Women also highlighted the importance of skills, access to markets, livelihood opportunities, and supportive community networks.

These conversations reinforced our interest in approaches such as Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), skills development, leadership training, and community-based economic empowerment.

    Listening to Young People

Young people are an important part of any community’s future.

Our conversations also highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, confidence, leadership abilities, and pathways toward productive livelihoods.

    What We Learned

Perhaps the most important lesson from our first engagement was that there is no single solution to every community challenge.

Each community has its own strengths, priorities, history, and circumstances.

That is why DESDAI Women’s Hope is committed to a community-centered approach.

We will continue listening, learning, adapting, and working alongside communities as programs develop.

    The Beginning of a Relationship

Our first community engagement was not about arriving with all the answers.

It was about beginning a relationship.

    It was about asking questions.

    It was about listening.

And most importantly, it was about recognizing that sustainable change is stronger when communities have a voice in shaping it.

This is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing the conversation with [Village/Zone Name] and the communities we serve.
